Invitation to Exibition from Samita Basu

The Rickshaw Puller

This is a conte’ pencil drawing I did in Calcutta. The man was a rickshaw-puller, who parked his rickshaw under my balcony every day. I noticed alertness in his eyes that belied his age, an alertness that, possibly, comes from viewing life at close quarters. He was a good model. As I was drawing him, his eyes kept boring into me. It took me a couple of days to complete the drawing. He observed me very keenly throughout the exercise, and then walked off without taking any money.
