Influences

With exhibitions in the Taj Art Gallery and the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, Samita’s work has received critical acclaim for its ability to reach out and communicate. As an artist, she strives to ‘arrive at an artistic statement that is more reflective than the impermanence of a moment in time.’

Born in Calcutta into a family of writers and painters, she cites the intellectually stimulating environment of her childhood as one of her first early influences. Not surprisingly, her work is characterized by its strong themes and unusual subjects. Coming from what she terms ‘a socialistic mindset’, she has a deep sense of empathy for the lesser privileged. Her paintings reflect this in their treatment of subjects from everyday life. Urchins, street vendors and rickshaw pullers are compassionately framed on canvas as seen through the eyes of a fellow human being, as opposed to simply being captured by the strokes of an artist.

In a style that is that is at once both sensitive and and insightful, her work explores the soul of her subjects through the window of their eyes. It is this recurring theme that drives her work and can be seen in her most recent series titled ‘Shades of Shakti”

Samita’s evolution as an artist traces her personal journey. Her forthcoming work, she believes, will reflect her inner search to understand and appreciate the meaning and purpose of existence.
